Member Meeting
All North Oakland Wild Ones members are welcome to attend this meeting! We will be discussing additional opportunities for our chapter, along with the 2017 event schedule. There are many opportunities available for volunteering, so we hope to see you there!
How Not to Plant Woodies
Presented by Janet Macunovich
Join us as Janet teaches us about the Dos and Don'ts of planting woody species, include removal of the packaging the tree or shrub comes in, width and depth of hole to dig, handling of the root system in prep for planting and attention to the ridge on the tree trunk that indicates the level of the soil around the trunk.
The public is welcome and encouraged to attend this free North Oakland Wild Ones event. Donations are always welcome to help bring future educational opportunities! Doors open at 7:30, and the presentation starts at 8 pm. This is a half hour later than our normal start time!
About Janet Macunovich
Janet is a professional gardener, designer, author and educator. Known as "the lady at the flower house, the one with no lawn" she began designing for others in 1980, teaching a college garden design course in 1987, and published her first book in 1990.
In 1985 Janet establishedPerennial Favorites, a garden and landscape design firm. In 1988 she expanded the business from part-time to full-time.
Janet's formal education in gardening and design includes hundreds of hours of seminars and workshops at botanical gardens and educational institutions in several States. She has completed the Michigan State University Extension gardening program and is active in the community as an Advanced Master Gardener. She sees education as a lifelong process and continues it for herself in formal classes, industry seminars, Agriculture Department programs, books, videotapes, articles, and discussions with students in her classes.
Janet is a dynamic instructor and presenter. She offers talks and classes, developing material to fit specific needs of organizations, such as the Perennial Plant Association, Chicago Botanic Gardens, Niagara Falls School of Horticulture Alumni and the Tennessee Nursery and Landscape Association. Her classes cover a wide range of topics, including Perennial Garden Design, Garden Care, Rock Gardening, Landscape Design, and Controlling Pests and Disease. She established The Michigan School of Gardening, where she was a director and senior instructor. The school provided classes and a two year horticultural curriculum to over 2,000 students in southeast Michigan from 1996 to 2008.

The Sentinel Tree Project - "Eyes on the Forest"

Maples, hemlocks and walnuts are the highest priority for Sentinel Trees due to the threat of the Asian Longhorn Beetle which attacks maples, the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, and the Thousand Cankers Disease of walnuts.
This a great opportunity to be a Citizen Scientist and learn about the MSU "Eyes on the Forest" project. Learn about early detection of these new invasive pests and how to be pro-active by monitoring a tree in your yard, a neighbor's yard, a city park, or a forest.
We will also have a short Member Meeting at 6:30 pm before the program. Agenda includes future programs and activities, and how to help to promote our Chapter and publicize our events.

Bringing Meadowscapes to Big and Small Spaces
Bringing Meadowscapes to Big and Small Spaces is a film by Catherine Zimmerman that raises awareness about sustainable, native, healthy, easy and affordable land care practices that save wildlife and human life. Zimmerman, an award-winning filmmaker, weaves her personal journey about changing her own landscape choices, making this film a practical guide to accomplish such a change.We will be showing the film to the group.
We will also have a short Member Meeting at 6:30 pm before the program. Agenda includes future programs and activities, and how to help to promote our Chapter and publicize our events.

Spring Beauties: A Walk in the Woods at Tenhave Nature Preserve in Royal Oak
Led by Naturalist Bob Muller and a botanist of the Royal Oak Nature Society for North Oakland Wild Ones and Friends.
During our hike, we will be looking for Red & White Trillium, blue & yellow Violets, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Bloodroot, Trout Lily, Wild Geranium, Spice Bush, Spring Beauty, Wood Poppy, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, & Wood Anemone and more. This is an outdoor event walking on trails that may be muddy/or contain rocks and roots. Park at Lexington/Marais lot & meet at Lexington entrance.
There will be no member meeting in April.
