Jane’s yard is a living landscape, inspired by Sarah Stein’s Noah’s Garden and Doug Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home, designed and planted over 44 years with layered diversity to mimic a natural open woodland. Many species of understory trees and shrubs, tolerant of reduced light levels below the existing mature tree canopy, have been added providing habitat richness and biodiversity. As more lawn was eliminated, there was space for woodland wildflowers and ferns, for wetland species, and for open meadow flora to sustain many more species of wildlife. The native landscape continues to evolve as species on all levels ebb and flow, and as experience and new knowledge is gained to understand vital ecosystems. Current native species list is 300+.
You are welcome to wander the yard during the event, with guided tours at 1:15 pm and 2:00pm. Since there is one hour between the morning yard visit and this one, please come here at noon and enjoy a social lunch-time (with your bag lunch).
Success! We have recently smothered 3 areas of Vinca major; check it out. The plan is to design using native woodland species in the Spring.
Help! We have gout weed, Aegopodium podagraria, spreading (thanks to a neighbor!) and Yikes! chameleon plant, Houttuynia cordata, which did not smother under cardboard and mulch! - Jane
Jane will have a plant list as well as a photo/historical album of some of her gardening journey on this property. An evolving, living landscape, an 'ongoing work in progress', always learning and sharing. Current species on the one acre property is 300+.
